Analysis of Contents Pages

The colour scheme of this contents page is very consistent; the white, black and red colours match with the typical 'Q' style and colours. Just from these three main colours we are familiar with the magazine and the genre.
This contents page is well layed out with columns; this gives the page structure and an easy layout for the reader. The columns are titled boldly to help the reader find exactly what they want to find. This contents page has just two images - the biggest one obviously being more important by holding a bigger story for the magazine. The image itself reflects the genre of music; you can tell that it is not classical music or pop, it may be indie or rock etc. The main image is obviously the most important and they want it to be the first thing that the reader sees on this page. The main image of the band helps reflect the genre of the magazine; the clothes they are wearing, their expressions, their body language and the location of the picture. They are standing on a hill in a field outside in gloomy weather, wearing very plain dark clothes, with the main 'singer' wearing glasses and they are all standing together with their hands in their pockets or behind their backs standing straight, all with the same neutral facial expression. A contents page is supposed to 'match' the front cover by still having the same colour scheme, text fonts etc. That is exactly what this contents page does - by looking at the front cover you can tell that this is the contents page for this magazine. By having the magazine title 'Q' in the top left corner; the same red, white and black colour scheme and the font being very similar if not the same is how we recognise the magazine. Overall, I really like this contents page as it is an impressive 'mirror' of the front cover and that is what a professional contents page should be.

This contents page is basic and simple but smart and professional. The page is very neat - well layed out; you have all of the pictures on the right and the writing on the left. The page numbers are separated into different 'categories' which is organised and makes it easy to read and doesn't put the reader off. The colour scheme is also very basic - red, white and black; this matches the front cover. Its keeps it simple and nice to look at - it looks very sophisticated. The main image is quite strange in the fact that it does not really represent much; if I was to see this picture I would not think 'rock' type music. This also goes for the other images on the contents page, however they have obviously been used for a reason and perhaps this is beyond my understanding. I like how each image has its page number on it; this is good as the reader may have bought this magazine for one particular story and it's good that they can get straight to it.
My Contents Page
Images Used

This image is going to be used on my contents page - this is a picture of the main artist featured in my magazine. I really like this picture, I wanted to use it on my front cover but I know that it wouldn't represent a pop magazine; but I made sure that it would still feature in my magazine. Just looking at this picture you would not relate it to pop music, but a lot of magazines have a photo shoot of the main artist as put a lot of the images in the magazine and relate it to the interview. The picture on the left is the original and the picture on the right is the edited version - I definitely prefer the edited one, is shows a lot more detail and gives the picture a bright but calm effect. It also helps to hide the crease in the wall in the background, so I could use this image but I wouldn't have to worry too much about cropping it.
Steps
Version 1
This is the first version of my contents page - I like it but the only thing that I want to change is the layout. I agree that it does look quite like what a pop music magazine would look like but I think that the slanted pictures look very random as my magazine does not have that feature anywhere else. Whilst I try to change the alignment of the images I may also try a new layout of the contents page, just to compare and see what works best.
This is the final version of my contents page - with all of the changes I wanted to make from the first one.My first version is more of a pop contents by having more images and them being slanted; but the second one matches with my front cover more with the images being more aligned. A contents page is supposed to be the mirror of the front cover, so for this reason I have chosen my second version as my final contents page.
